How effective is the combination of your product and ancillary texts?

The film distributor is responsible for leasing the film to the audience through DVD and theater. The Distributor has a contract and gets a percentage of all the money made form the films sold, It is also the distributors job to advertise the film through posters and adverts as the more people that see the film the more money they will receive. It is their job to convince the audience to watch the film, it is important they advertise well to make the most out of the film as they have to compete with other activites and distributors. They use many ways of advertising films such as viral websites such as you-tube to place trailers, TV adverts, newspaper and magazine adverts, cinema trailers and posters in many places. Films such "Untraceable" also create websites to shock and spark conversation and interest.

Depending on the age of the audience it effects how the film is advertised, for a young audience it may be advertised more on the internet and adverts around TV shows as they are more likely to see the trailer and to be intersted in. It is important for a film distributor to know its target audience so that they can more effectively appeal to them. Before the film "untraceable" was released they made a website similar to the website in the film in which the more hits it got the more pain and closer to death the person got. This sparked a lot of interest as it was done very realistically and stuck with lots of people as people talked about it. It is important for information about the film to be found on the internet if aimed at a young audienc so a trailer can be viewed easily as people talk about the film or see posters for it. Official websites and information on websites as wikipedia offer brief plot information and information on actors, directors etc that may interest the reader.

It is important to create an image for the products so that they are easily recogniseable on all advertisements. For my poster I used an image similar to a shot from the trailer which I think had a good effect and I think it is quite memorable. The shot where hes searching for the protagonist with the torch works really well and helps convey the chase and search, It is also a low angle shot giving the effect of power to the antagonist. It also gives very little away about the film, it makes the audience ask questions but gives a little to hopefully tell the audience what type of film it is, such as it being very dark and the tag line helps give more information. To help the trailer to link with the poster I used the same font for the title on the trailer and poster to help create and identity for the film. The film cover is another photo of the actor who plays the films antagonist.

For the poster I took a picture from scratch using and idea from one of the shots inthe trailer, I used a new photo so it would be higher quality and work better as a still image. It is low angle to give dominacne to the antagonist who's face is out of view to add mystery to the poster. Horror posters rarely give away the face of the antagonist as the fear seems to disappear when you know what it is. The poster is very dark which is a horror convention in its self but then added a lens flare to create the effect of the torch shining on the audience. The font is the same as the trailer to hepl create the identity of the film. Tag line helps to give an idea of the film and fits well with the image, "He will find you" shows how the antagonist is searching for the protagonist, which in this case is you.

The magazine cover was heavily designed from existing Total Film covers to give an idead of size and style. I chose to use an existing magazing company so that it would look more professional. The background to the magazine was originally a flat black but by adding a gradient i think it added a more professional look. For the main image I used an out of character picture of the antagonist who should be fairly recognisable as he is shown in the trailer alot. the magazine also places the film title prominantly on the cover where it is shown as the biggest story in the magazine. The interview promises information with one of the films actors, thus advertising the film.

Overall i believe both products advertise the film well in a many ways and also hepl create and overall image for the product. The trailer and poster both give information on the film, story and character roles well with the time they're given. The magazine helps by giving out more information on the film in general and the poster gives more information on actors.

  1. This answer needs a lot of development. A good idea would also be to include some visual material showing the similarity of visual style between your poster and your trailer.
